Designing a Tool For Healthy Eating

The Problem
Fast food restaurants are often convenient and affordable, but they typically serve food that is high in calories, fat, sugar, and sodium. This unhealthy food can lead to weight gain, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Wholesome chef aims to eliminate that problem whenever someone wants to eat healthily in a timely manner that is convenient.
User Personas
I developed two user personas for my project. I wanted to be inclusive to as many groups as possible, so the two following user personas represent different demographics.
User Journey Map
Mapping Harry’s user journey revealed how helpful it would be for users to have access to a dedicated healthy food provider that is efficient.
Paper Wireframes
As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research.
Digital Wireframes
I wanted a concise checkout system that takes three steps to really make sure the user orders what they want.
Low-Fidelity Prototype
The low-fidelity prototype connected the primary user flow of ordering their food, so the prototype could be used in a usability study with users.
Usability Studies
I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.
High-Fidelity Prototype - Mobile App
Users wanted less toppings to be displayed and to have some information about the toppings there instead (name, calories). I added a “more options” tab so that the user could conveniently explore more toppings at their leisure.
I wanted to make this product a responsive one, so I made a desktop version of Wholesome Chef.

The final high-fidelity user flow for ordering healthy food and checkout. It also met user needs for a pickup or delivery option as well as more customization.

Research
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user groups identified through research was working with adults who don’t have time to cook meals and want something nutritional.
This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Wholesome Chef customers, but research also revealed that time was not the only factor limiting users from cooking at home.
Other user problems included obligations, interests, or challenges that make it difficult to get healthy food within a convenient time frame.

The app makes users feel like Wholesome Chef really thinks about how to meet their needs.

What I learned:
While designing the Wholesome Chef app, I learned that the first idea for apps are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies, having an open mind, and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s design.
